Athletics Program Manager (Queens)

Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

The Apex for Youth Athletics Program began in January 2011 as a partnership between Apex for Youth, PS 1 and the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center.  We began with about 25 students and 6 coaches. Fast forward to 2024, we are now serving over 400 students throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. We offer Basketball, Yoga, Volleyball and Running Club throughout the year through Saturday Programming, Community Events, School Break Programming, Summer Programming and our We Run As One Summer Basketball League.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Apex’s Athletics Department addresses the educational, social, and emotional needs of elementary, middle, and high school students through Athletic programs (primarily Basketball with the addition of Yoga, Volleyball and  Running Club as other opportunities for youth to experience other sports they may be interested in), family nights, school break programming, and community events. Programs take place on Saturdays from October – May. Athletics also offers summer programming during July – August. These programs are run by staff with support from volunteers. 

The Manager will launch and oversee our Saturday Athletics Programs located in Flushing, Queens, in addition to additional programming that serves students and families enrolled in the Athletics programs. This role will be responsible for growing Athletics programming in Flushing and supporting Apex’s overall growth in Queens. This position will report to the Associate Director of Athletics Programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management (50%)

  • Oversee all aspects of the Queens Athletics program including student recruitment, program design, curriculum development, and site logistics, in collaboration with the Brooklyn and Manhattan Program Managers;
  • Growth of Athletics programming and supporting Apex’s overall growth in Queens
  • Provide supervision and ongoing support for Part-Time Facilitators;
  • Provide weekly on-site supervision and support at all scheduled Saturday sessions;
  • Collaborate with the Mental Health Services department to support Queens elementary youth on the Mental Health Services caseload;
  • Support collection and analysis of program data by the Program Data Analysis Manager including tracking enrollment and attendance, and implementing surveys to students and volunteers for feedback, and ensuring timely, accurate entry of data into Salesforce;


Volunteer Management (25%)

  • Oversee the placement, training, and management of volunteers to ensure quality interactions between volunteers and youth with the support of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Elementary program managers. 
  • Along with the team, interview prospective volunteers and support volunteer intake
  • Communicate with volunteers about session logistics and provide feedback on their participation/performance;


Partnerships & Events (20%)

  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with partner schools and organizations;
  • Recruit and enroll youth from partner schools and organizations into programming;
  • Oversee all communication and support for students/families, volunteers, partner schools, and external facilitators.
  • Assist with the planning for and occasionally run Athletics community events, including Family Nights, field trips, Hoops Over Hate, and School Break Programming.
  • Liaise with Development department for fundraising needs, including collaborating with corporate partners;


Other Duties (5%)

  • Attend all program and leadership meetings, as necessary
  • Perform other duties as required

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • GED required. BA or BS preferred
  • 2+ years of experience managing projects and/or programs for youth and families
  • Experience developing engaging lesson plans and group facilitation in-person group settings
  • Experience building partnerships with schools and community organizations and ability to attend partner organizations’ events 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to create genuine relationships
  • Strong ability and interest in building community and genuine relationships;
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail
  • Proactive nature and self-starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously;
  • Enjoys working closely with a team, as well as independently;
  • Ability to work on Saturdays, and take Sunday-Monday as the weekend
  • Experience in organized team sports (High School or College) preferred
  • Spoken fluency in Mandarin and written competency in Chinese preferred but not required

Salary Range: The salary range for this position is $64,500 – $70,000 depending on experience.

 

OVERVIEW OF BENEFITS

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
