Apex for Youth works with more than 700 volunteers who help us serve 2,500 Asian American and immigrant youth year-round. Personal relationships are at the core of our work—we rely on trusted adult role models like you to support our youth as they explore their interests and identities through activities nurturing their education, health & well-being, and community engagement. Thank you to everyone who applied by our priority deadline of June 9, 2024! Although it has passed, we are still welcoming volunteer applications for our programs. Please note that responses may be delayed while we process existing applications. Your interest means a lot to us!

“As a volunteer, I get to see and share in the unbridled joy of kids playing basketball, learning the game, learning how to play with each other, and just having fun. Giving back your time brings back a ton of fulfillment and satisfaction.”

Please refer to each individual program below for its volunteer recruitment status and specific intake and interview timeline. Note that our Middle School and High School Mentoring and Athletics Programs require you to reside in or nearby New York City. For all other programs, residency in or nearby New York City is not required for the time being.

A successful Apex volunteer enjoys interacting with and supporting young people, growing and learning about themselves, and understands the importance of committing to the full time period required by their program.

You can read more about the areas of interests and skills that best suit each of our volunteer opportunities on the program pages linked above. In general, we suggest you apply for the program based on your interest in the age of youth you want to work with, the time commitment, and your availability on the days the program takes place.

Apex accepts applications on a rolling basis. With a few exceptions, you will hear from Apex staff regarding an interview during June-September. Pending the interview, volunteers are placed into programs either in September/October for school year based programs, and in June for summer programs. Detailed program schedules are available on our individual program pages, linked above.

Apex reaches out to volunteers between June – September to schedule volunteer interviews. If you have already applied to be a volunteer and have not heard back from us regarding an interview, you can reach out to volunteer@apexforyouth.org. Contact information for each program can be found on their program pages, linked above.

No, volunteers may only volunteer for one program at a time.

Apex volunteers must be able to commit to the full time period of their program of choice. Apex’s programs vary in time commitment, with opportunities ranging from 6 weeks to 2 years. If you cannot commit to the program of your first choice, we suggest you check out our other programs to see if there is an option that better suits your availability and commitment preferences.

Our programs that serve elementary aged youth require volunteers to be at least 14 years of age or older. All other programs require our volunteers to be at least 21 years old.

To become an Apex volunteer, please first fill out our volunteer application form. Applicants selected to move forward will hear from Apex staff from  June – September to schedule an interview. Based on the interview, applicants who are selected must first complete a background check and training in order to begin volunteering.
