About the Career Exploration Program

Through networking opportunities, professional development workshops, and internships, Apex for Youth’s Career Exploration programming  provides high school students and Apex alumni with opportunities to learn about diverse career pathways, identify their professional interests and strengths, and develop skills and knowledge that support them in this journey.

Apex’s Career Exploration Series

Throughout the school year, Apex for Youth hosts monthly workshops at different companies, businesses, and organizations throughout New York City. These workshops are open to all high school and college students and give participants the chance to explore different careers within a variety of industries.  Past workshops have included:

  • Resume and interview preparation
  • Lessons in credit and personal finance 
  • Opportunities to network with professionals with careers in finance, tech, higher education, healthcare and more.

Location: Varies (virtual and in-person, New York City)

Dates: One-day event, 2-hours

Summer Career Exploration Program - High School and College Internships

Apex’s Summer Career Exploration Program offers high school students (11th and 12th grade) and current college students immersive, paid internships during the summer so they can explore career pathways of interest. Volunteer supervisors work with youth to support their professional development. All interns are hired and paid through Apex for Youth.

Apex’s high school internships are made possible by the generous support of the J.T. Tai Foundation.

Location:

  • Virtual and in-person, New York City)

Dates:

  • College Internship Supervisor: 8-weeks, June-August
  • High School (current 11th and 12th graders): 6-weeks, July -August

Qualifications

  • Career Exploration Series 
    • Have an interest in collaborating with Apex staff to develop a meaningful workshop or career panel for 15-30 high school and college youth at your worksite
    • Be able to recruit volunteers from your worksite with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who enjoy interacting with high school and college aged youth.
  • Summer Career Exploration Program Supervisors 
    • Provide youth-centered supervision and guidance for a high school OR college student through an early professional experience at your worksite either in person or virtually
    • Exhibit patience, positivity, and resourcefulness when navigating challenges with your intern in a professional space
    • Have the capacity to host a high school (current 11th and 12th grader) or college student at your company/business/organization for 6- or 8 weeks over the summer. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Career Exploration Series
    • Work with Apex to develop a meaningful opportunity for professional learning and exploration
    • Manage worksite logistics including secure space and refreshments for the event and recruiting volunteers
    • Summer Career Exploration Program Internships Supervisors 
    • Develop a meaningful internship experience for your summer intern that will allow them to learn about your industry and contribute to your workplace
    • Create a supportive supervision plan for your intern and check in regularly with Apex staff on their progress
    • Integrate your intern into your team and provide networking and learning opportunities with other members of your company/business/organization
    • Coordinate any necessary logistics at your workplace to accommodate an intern, which can include permission and clearance to host an intern, workspace, access to necessary technology/software

  • Commit to the participation requirements for your program of choice, see the schedule tab for more information. 
  • Attend mandatory trainings
  • Event planning and event time 
  • Complete mandatory check in calls with staff

Qualifications

  • Career Exploration Workshops: 
    • High school or college students in New York City 
    • Must be able to travel to events in NYC 
  • Summer Career Exploration Program, JT Tai High School Interns
    • Be a current 11th and 12th Grade student in New York City 
    • Must committee to  20+ hours a week for 6-weeks from July-August
  • Low income Asian American youth receive first priority for our programs

 

Commitment

  • 20-hours of internship hours at worksite
  • Additional weekly career exploration and professional development workshops in July  
  • Must attend training, check-ins throughout the summer, end of summer presentation

    • Students must register for specific events  
  • Summer Career Exploration Program, JT Tai High School Interns
    • Complete a Student Application (link below)
    • Complete the SCEP Application (Open from December-January)
    • Students will be interviewed by program staff
    • *A completed application process does not guarantee a match*
    • Low income Asian American youth receive first priority for our programs
