At Apex, our goal is for our youth to graduate as confident, college-ready individuals who give back to the community. We aim to instill a sense of community service by setting up volunteer sessions with other organizations throughout the city. Over Thanksgiving weekend, a group of our mentors took their mentees out to various sites and:

1) Prepared and served hot nutritious meals to the homeless and needy
2) Delivered hot nutritious meals to the elderly who are unable to or have difficulty leaving their homes
3) Shared a smile, greeting, and moment with people who are often alone and isolated in our communities

For this holiday season, they volunteered at Father’s Heart Ministries, Village Temple Soup Kitchen, Church of the Village, Goddard Riverside Community Center and Citymeals-on-Wheels.

It was a rewarding and unique experience, best summed up by one of our mentees: “I didn’t know it was such an important thing to give them (until I volunteered). When I gave them the food and they thanked me, it felt very rewarding to know that I helped someone, even in a small way.”

Thanks to everyone who came out, and we’ll be volunteering together again soon!
