Associate Director of Mentoring Programs

Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director of Mentoring Programs is responsible for building and maintaining Apex for Youth’s Middle School and High School Mentoring Programs as well as the National Virtual Mentoring Program. Mentoring programs typically take place on Saturdays from September-June. All programs are run by Apex staff with support from dedicated volunteers.

The Associate Director of Mentoring Programs oversees a team of 7 full-time staff members (4 managers and 3 coordinators). This role directly supervises four program managers, including 2 middle school mentoring managers in Manhattan and Brooklyn, the high school mentoring manager in Manhattan, and the manager who leads the National Virtual Mentoring Program. The Associate Director will report to the Deputy Director of Programs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in working with early adolescent and adolescent youth, has excellent project management skills, and experience supervising a diverse team of staff towards achieving strategic goals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Programmatic Strategy (20%)

  • Leading the ongoing development of Mentoring programs across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and virtually; 
  • Lead implementation of middle school and high school program expansion in Queens and Brooklyn;
  • Contribute leadership voice to organizational discussions about expansion of mentoring programs within NYC and beyond.

Department Management (35%)

  • Oversee all aspects of Mentoring Programs including program design, partnership development and management, curriculum development, and supervision and training of staff;
  • Lead event-planning for major events and outings with support of program managers;
  • Oversee the recruitment, enrollment, and support of all mentees in the mentoring programs;
  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, intake, placement, and training process for the mentoring program;
  • Create and manage Mentoring department budget in collaboration with Operations Department;
  • Oversee collection and analysis of program data with the support of program managers and the Program Data Analysis Manager.

Supervision (30%)

  • Provide supervision and ongoing support to a team of four mentoring managers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the National Virtual Mentoring Program;
  • Coach and support staff on team to grow and develop;
  • Establish ethos of teamwork and collaboration within department;

Collaboration (10%)

  • Collaborate with other departments including College and Career Success, Mental Health, Elementary, Athletics to successfully support and retain youth across programs;
  • Manage the Mentoring Program relationship with Development department for fundraising and event needs;
  • Foster partnerships with external organizations to collaborate on programming and events;

Other Duties (5%)

  • Actively participate as a vocal member of the program leadership team, leading the vision and development for Mentoring programming at Apex;
  • Attend all program and leadership meetings, as necessary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS preferred;
  • 5-7 years experience working with youth in a management role preferred;
  • Ability to think critically and approach situations with a problem-solving mindset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to create genuine relationships;
  • Proactive nature and self starter, able to move work forward independently
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail;
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience working with low-income and first-generation students is a plus;
  • Demonstrates commitment to Apex for Youth’s mission, vision, and core values;
  • Enjoys working closely with a team, as well as independently;
  • Ability to work in-person on Saturdays, and take Sunday and Monday as the weekend.


Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $80,000-92,000 depending on experience.


OVERVIEW OF BENEFITS

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, organization-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July week, 5 sick days per year, and 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
