Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.
Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Grants Manager is responsible for managing, writing, and submitting proposals and reports for various types of funders, including family foundations, institutional foundations, corporations, government entities, and, as needed, individual major and principal donors. The Grants Manager maintains a calendar and operational plan for grant submissions and reports. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Grants Manager will work with the Development Team to develop a comprehensive and strategic plan to build on existing relationships with corporate institutions and foundations and create and support structures around Grant Management. The manager will oversee a growing portfolio of approximately $1M-$3M/year of funding.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Create Proposals and Reports (70%)
- Under the supervision of the Director of Development, in collaboration with the Development Team’s corporate, foundation, and individual giving officers, create compelling grant proposals, solicitations, and accurate reports to achieve fundraising goals for a growing portfolio of $1M-$3M in grant funding annually
- Maintain a library of current brand language, stories, program data, and organization budgets to provide effective and consistent proposals and reports for the Development Team
- Write, edit, and submit grant proposals and letters of inquiry following funder requirements and deadlines
- Become a knowledge expert on Apex’s programs and history, working closely with program, data, and marketing staff to gather data and impact stories to prepare compelling narratives for proposals and reports
- Collaborate with the Marketing Team to ensure proposals and reports have updated brand language and follow the style guide
- Collaborate with Program and Operations Teams to develop appropriate budgets and expense reports for applications and reports
- Respond to requests for proposals, reports, and forms from government entities, corporate partners, and foundations
Manage and Organize Grant Projects (25%)
- Provide accurate and timely project management for each grant, collaborating with fellow contributors to prepare grant proposals, reports, and renewals; and develop systems to streamline processes
- Monitor grant expectations, needs, deliverables, and programmatic updates, and maintain regular communication with internal stakeholders
- Ensure prompt communication about and acknowledgment of all gifts related to corporate, foundation, and government grants
- Independently manage government grant engagement strategy, applications, submissions, and processes
- Maintain and manage organization grant calendar
- Maintain updated grant records and files, including maintaining grant records in Salesforce database
- Identify, research, and report on prospective grant opportunities and develop plans for cultivating the relationships
Collaborate with the Development Team (5%)
- Serve as a key member of the Development Team and regularly report on foundation, corporate, and government relationships, funding, and engagement metrics
- Perform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA or BS preferred
- 5+ years of effective fundraising and grant writing experience in a closely relevant nonprofit or philanthropic organization required
- Strong writing, editing, research, presentation and communication skills required
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with high attention to detail required
- Track record of meeting deadlines and successfully managing concurrent projects required
- A genuine passion for and commitment to Apex’s mission; a strong storyteller with ability to creatively and effectively share organization’s work with stakeholders using a variety of media required
- Demonstrated success in developing and stewarding relationships with philanthropic and corporate institutional donors, as well as individuals, or comparable experience preferred
- Experience with managing government grants and knowledge of New York City and New York State government structure and granting agencies and processes preferred
- Experience building and reporting on program budgets in the context of grants preferred
- Ability to be proactive, not reactive, and to think strategically across multiple, concurrent projects preferred
- Knowledge of the NY nonprofit, philanthropic, and Asian American community as well as the broader national network preferred
- Experience with and understanding of CRM systems such as Salesforce preferred
Salary range: The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000 depending on experience.
Overview of Benefits
Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, organization-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July week, 5 sick days per year, and 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
