“I’m currently in my 5th year as a volunteer for Apex for Youth. I began in the Athletics Program as a basketball coach and later got involved with Middle School Mentoring, balancing both roles for several years. Now, I’m a high school mentor, guiding my mentee Ben through his sophomore year.”
“My favorite memory from the program is seeing my mentee find his voice. He started out very shy, but shortly after I started with him, for the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Tiger, we set a goal for him to speak up more during our mentor-mentee workshops. After that, when attending a workshop together, with a lot of people we didn’t know, and he was very vocal about conveying his thoughts. He has continued to speak up and has amazed me with his maturity and perspective. I am very proud of him. I also am so grateful for the amazing friends I’ve made through Apex!” — BHARGAVA CHITTI, Apex Superlative
“I grew up in Flushing, in somewhat of a bubble. Being part of an Asian enclave meant my identity was never a source of confusion, but it also left me unprepared for the world beyond New York City. It wasn’t until I went out of state for college that I realized how sheltered I had been and how little I knew about life outside my community. Having mentors who understood my cultural background and experiences would have been invaluable in navigating that uncertain stage of my life. That’s why I deeply believe in the power of mentorship and programs that directly support the youth in our community.”
