At Apex for Youth, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to explore higher education, regardless of financial barriers or background. Our College and Career Success Program is designed to introduce high school students, many of whom are first-generation, to a variety of college experiences, helping them envision their own futures.
As part of this initiative, the College Access Program provides in-depth support for 11th and 12th grade students, guiding them as they explore their interests and future pathways in preparation for the college application process. Students learn how to identify and communicate their strengths, research and find the best-fit colleges, and receive individualized support to navigate barriers they may encounter during all parts of the college application, financial aid, and scholarship search process. Best of all, this opportunity is completely free, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of a student’s future
This winter, 20 Apex for Youth high school students embarked on a two-day college tour to visit SUNY Albany and Vassar College. The trip was more than just an opportunity to walk around campuses, it was a transformative experience filled with new insights, meaningful connections, and of course, fun moments that made the journey unforgettable.
For many of our students, this was their first time stepping onto a college campus, making it a powerful moment of realization, college is not just a distant possibility but an achievable goal.
Hearing from students first hand highlights the impact of this experience:
“Before, I really limited myself to big colleges because I wanted a big campus and community, but now after seeing Vassar, small colleges are also a good fit for me and I like having a close environment and community around me.”
–Janice, 11th Grade Mentee
The tour began at SUNY Albany, where students experienced campus life firsthand by having lunch at the State Quad dining hall. Afterward, they joined a guided tour of the university, learning about academic programs, student organizations, and the resources available to help students thrive. The day concluded with an exciting bonding activity at Urban Air Trampoline Park, followed by a delicious Italian dinner at Ralph’s Tavern.
The next day, our students traveled to Vassar College, a prestigious liberal arts school known for its close-knit community and academic excellence. The students explored the picturesque campus, engaged with tour guides, and enjoyed a meal at Gordon Commons, where they connected with members of the Chinese Student Community group. These interactions provided a valuable perspective on student life and the importance of representation in higher education.
Exposure to different institutions allows students to expand their aspirations, visualize themselves in a collegiate setting, and gain confidence in their ability to pursue higher education.
This trip and many other opportunities like it are made possible through the dedication of mentors, volunteers, donors, and partners. Apex for Youth provides free programs that support students in their academic and personal growth, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to navigate their futures.
Through experiences like this, Apex for Youth continues to empower students to dream big, explore new opportunities, and take the next steps toward their bright futures.
