We know this is a challenging moment for many of our immigrant families who are affected by the pause of SNAP benefits, as the cost of living continues to rise in NYC.

Below are some resources that may be helpful during this time. Even in the midst of these hardships, October reminded us of the strength, joy, and resilience that flourish when our community gathers and grows together. When we come together, supporting one another, sharing resources, and showing up, we remind each other that no one faces these challenges alone.

As workshops, mentoring sessions, and volunteer trainings return in full swing, our spaces are once again filled with energy – students reuniting with friends and mentors, new families joining our community, and youth discovering what it means to start fresh with purpose.

From middle school youth exploring Brooklyn to kicking off our monthly Family Nights, we saw our youth’s confidence grow and our community strengthen. Whether through a basketball drill, an art project, or an activity challenge, each experience helped youth strengthen both their skills and connections.

This month reminds us that the start of a new cycle is building foundations and laying the groundwork for growth. With our dedicated staff, mentors, and volunteers by their side, youth are stepping into this school year with confidence, curiosity, and excitement.

Students reflected on how their families care for them and extended that idea into caring for something new – their very own succulents! Together, they created a safe and nurturing space for their plants, learning what it means to care for another living thing with patience and responsibility.

Neighborhood Exploration

The Middle School Mentoring Program in Brooklyn visited Green-Wood Cemetery in Sunset Park, where mentoring pairs embarked on adventures through the green spaces, history, and beauty of the 478-acre national historic landmark.

Basketball Core Fundamentals
Our first basketball sessions focused on getting students back to the basics and ready for the season ahead! Players revisited core fundamentals (passing, dribbling, and shooting) and began playing games. The goal was to help students build confidence, teamwork, and a strong skill base to carry forward – whether they join a school team, participate in our We Run As One Summer League, or continue with LMC Middle School Basketball.

Food Resources

Here are some resources, as SNAP benefits are paused due to the shutdown. If you or your family need support, here are some food resources available to everyone across NYC. Save, share, and spread the word.
