Hoops Over Hate 合影

In 2021, during a time of heightened anti-Asian hate across the country, a 13-year-old child in Queens was the target of a hate-fueled attack at PS20 Bowne Playground. It was a moment that shook the Flushing community but instead of responding with fear, the community chose action. That same year, Apex for Youth launched the first-ever Hoops Over Hate 3v3 Basketball Tournament.

What began as a grassroots response to injustice has since grown into an annual event that brings together youth from across Queens to compete and connect.

Empowering Youth Through Athletics

At Apex for Youth, athletics is more than just competition. Our basketball, running, volleyball, and yoga programs are designed to help young people build confidence, develop perseverance, and strengthen resilience on and off the court. These programs support students in developing leadership skills, learning teamwork, and building community across backgrounds.

Hoops Over Hate is a natural extension of that mission. By giving youth the opportunity to participate in something powerful and positive, we help them build confidence in who they are and in where they come from.

May 17, 2025: A Day on the Court, A Stand Against Hate

This year, Hoops Over Hate returned on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at John Bowne playground. The day kicked off with a free basketball clinic for 4th–5th graders. Younger students were introduced to the fundamentals of basketball in a welcoming, team-oriented setting.

From there, the court came alive with back-to-back 3v3 matchups across three tournament divisions:

  • Hoops Dreams (6th–8th Grade)
  • Lady Hoops Dream (6th–8th Grade girls division)
  • Rising Stars (9th–12th Grade)

More than just a basketball tournament, the event created a space where young people could meet new friends, learn to work as a team, and stand proudly for what they believe in. Whether players were seasoned athletes or first-timers, all were welcomed, supported, and celebrated.

Powered by Community

None of this would be possible without our dedicated partners. We’re grateful to the Flushing YMCA, Kissena SynergyNYC Parks for helping us build something that continues to grow stronger every year. Special shoutout to 加查 for the amazing prizes.

From a moment of pain came a movement of purpose and on this court, the next generation is leading the way.
