Apex Involvement: 4th grade tutor since September 2010
Hometown: Basking Ridge, NJ
Profession: Strategist at Music Publishing Company

1. Why do you volunteer with Apex?
My reasons for volunteering with Apex are purely selfish. Seeing a student grasp a concept they have been struggling with because of you is an incredibly gratifying experience. Moreover, helping an underserved community gives me perspective in a city where it is easy to forget what is important. Plus kids say the darndest things.

2. Who was one of the most influential adults in your life when you were growing up?
My grandmother took care of my brother and me every day after school because both of our parents worked. Her struggle as an immigrant to make a living and create opportunities for her family is a constant source of inspiration and a reminder of the value of hard work.

3. What has been one of your favorite Apex memories?
Each and every breakfast/lunch/dim sum with my fellow volunteers where we shared the most awesome things our kids said that day, what teaching methods were effective, what problems the students struggled on, and more often than I care to admit, what 4th-grade-level question we got wrong.

4. The craziest thing I’ve seen in New York is…
Watching Joey Chestnut eat 68 hotdogs in 10 minutes during the 2009 Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Sorry Kobayashi!

5. My favorite meal is…
Di Fara Regular Pie for 1.
