Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

 

JOB OVERVIEW

The Grants Manager is responsible for researching corporate, foundation, and government grant prospects and preparing letters of inquiry, grant proposals, budgets, and periodic and final reports. The Grants Manager maintains a calendar and operational plan for grant submissions and reports. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Grants Manager will work with the Development Team to develop a comprehensive and strategic plan to build on existing relationships with corporate institutions and foundations and create and support structures around Grant Management. The manager will oversee a growing portfolio of approximately $1 million a year of funding.

The ideal candidate will have experience in building and stewarding relationships with corporate and institutional philanthropy partners, as well as with government grants. They will be a self-starter, great communicator, detail-oriented, extremely organized, possess a strong work ethic, and have a proven track record of meeting goals and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a highly collaborative environment. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Development, and in collaboration with the Development Team, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate and foundation donors to achieve fundraising goals for a growing portfolio of $1 million in grant funding annually by developing grant proposals and letters of intent that match institutional donors with their passions and interests around Apex
  • Support the grant application and stewardship process for corporate donors in collaboration with the Corporate Partnerships Manager, and for foundation funders in collaboration with the Development Team
  • Write, edit, and submit grant proposals and letters of inquiry in accordance with funder requirements and deadlines. Develop presentations to engage donors. Collaborate with programming and operations teams to develop appropriate budgets and expense reports for applications and reports.
  • Maintain and manage grant calendars; coordinate with program, data, and operations teams to prepare grant proposals, reports, and renewals for timely submission; and develop protocols to streamline processes
  • Monitor grant expectations, needs, deliverables and programmatic updates, and maintain regular communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain updated grant records and files, including maintaining grant records in Salesforce database
  • Identity, research and report on prospective grant opportunities and develop plans for cultivating the relationships
  • Develop a solid familiarity with Apex’s programs, working closely with program, data and marketing staff to gather data and impact stories in order to prepare compelling narratives for proposals and reports
  • Ensure prompt communication about and acknowledgement of all gifts related to corporate and foundation giving
  • Serve as a key member of the development team and regularly report on foundation and corporate relationships, funding and engagement metrics

 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of effective fundraising and grant writing.
  • Strong writing, editing, presentation and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Track record of meeting deadlines and successfully managing concurrent projects.
  • A genuine passion for and commitment to Apex’s mission; a strong storyteller with ability to creatively and effectively share organization’s work with stakeholders using a variety of media.

Nice to have:

  • Demonstrated success in developing and stewarding relationships with philanthropic and corporate institutional donors, as well as individuals, or comparable experience
  • Experience with managing government grants and knowledge of New York City and New York State government structure and granting agencies and processes
  • Experience building and reporting on program budgets in the context of grants
  • Ability to be proactive, not reactive, and to think strategically across multiple, concurrent projects
  • Positive “can do” attitude, flexible, team-oriented and collaborative, results-driven, and shows initiative
  • Knowledge of the NY nonprofit, philanthropic, and Asian American community as well as the broader national network
  • Experience with and understanding of CRM systems such as Salesforce

 

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $75,000-85,000, depending on experience.

 

Overview of Benefits:

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
