Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Deputy Director of Programs (“the Deputy”) is a newly created role at Apex and will report to the Director of Programs (DOP). The Deputy supports the DOP to translate Apex’s program strategy to day to day implementation. This includes supervising a team of Volunteer Program Associate Directors, supporting projects for program infrastructure and design, ensuring program efficacy and fidelity through conducting program visits and evaluation, and overseeing volunteer management. Additionally, the Deputy will manage Apex’s Community Programs, which serve as a pipeline to Apex’s long term program recruitment and implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning

  • Serve as a high level thought partner to the Director of Programs to develop overall strategy for Apex’s full suite of programming
  • Work with the Director of Programs to implement Apex’s Program Department strategic plan for all programs
  • Work with Director of Programs to establish appropriate goals and targets for programs and create operational plans alongside program leaders and staff  to achieve them

Supervision

  • Provide day to day supervision and management to a team of 4 Associate Directors including the Associate Director of Mentoring, Associate Director of Elementary Enrichment, Associate Director of Athletics, and Associate Director of College and Career Success
  • Supervise a team of 1-2 Community Network Coordinators to implement short term programs and one off events within new communities in order to build Apex visibility and recruitment pipelines to Apex’s volunteer programs

Program and Volunteer Management

  • Oversee daily operations of all programs within the Deputy’s program portfolio, ensuring that all programs follow appropriate and approved policies and protocols
  • Oversee Apex’s Community Programs in order to build awareness of Apex in new communities and build recruitment pipelines towards Apex’s volunteer programming
  • Ensure curriculum is clearly mapped and designed with larger department impact goals in mind and is implemented with fidelity and efficacy
  • Oversee the volunteer management process for Apex’s 600+ volunteers including recruitment, retention, and appreciation
  • Track progress towards program goals for programs within the Deputy portfolio
  • Oversee program team budget and help Associate Directors accurately manage each of their respective budgets
  • Conduct regular program visits to assess for program performance and provide observation feedback as well as quality improvement plans if necessary

Partnerships and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with internal Apex departments including Marketing, Development, and Operations in order to support organizational wide projects, programs, and initiatives
  • Collaborate with Program Data Analysis Manager to support program measurement and evaluation
  • Create, establish and steward partnerships with external organizations in New York City and beyond in order to advance Apex’s program goals
  • Support the planning and coordination of special events such as staff retreats, program events, and volunteer events
  • Attend leadership meetings as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS required
  • 8-10 years experience working with youth required
  • 5-6 years program management experience required
  • 3-4 years experience supervising teams, with at least 2 years of experience supervising managers of teams
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong ability and interest in building community and genuine relationships
  • Positive and bright disposition with “can do” attitude
  • Proactive nature and self starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously
  • Enjoys working independently, as well as collaboratively with a team
  • Candidates are expected to be able to commute to the Apex office in Manhattan at least 1-2 days a week
  • Ability to work Saturdays as needed, and take Sunday and Monday as the weekend

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $95,000 – $105,000, depending on experience.

Overview of Benefits

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
