ABOUT US

The mission of Apex for Youth is to deliver possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-­income families in NYC. Apex serves students from pre-K to 12th grade in New York City through educational, after-school, athletic, and middle school/high school mentoring programs.

We provide youth with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors, tutors, and coaches. Ultimately, Apex for Youth aims to nurture youth/teens who will be confident, college and career-ready individuals who are actively engaged in their community.

JOB OVERVIEW

Apex’s College and Career Access Department prepares our youth to be college and career ready by developing programming that meets the needs of our community and emphasizes exploration and curiosity, expands students’ scope when thinking about their personal, academic and professional goals and prepares them to make informed decisions for their post-secondary path. These programs are run by staff with support from volunteers. The College Access Program Manager will report to the Associate Director of College and Career Success and possess a strong background in working with low-income, first generation youth, college access, and excellent program development and management skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all aspects of a College Access Program including program design, curriculum development, and workshop facilitation
  • Plan and execute a recruitment plan for 11th and 12th grade students
  • Provide direct support for a caseload of 40-50 College Access Program students including monitoring progress, advising, and supporting students throughout the college application and financial aid process
  • Recruit, screen, and train volunteers to ensure quality interactions between volunteers and youth
  • Manage communication and support for volunteers and students; document case management notes
  • Support and facilitate college access training and workshops to other Apex high school student serving programs
  • Manage and facilitate college application programming during the summer
  • Collaborate with the College and Career Coordinator to facilitate Apex college, career and other post-secondary-related events including overnight college tours, caregiver and mentor informational workshops, career panels, etc.
  • Manage student evaluation data with support from Data Analyst, including tracking attendance, implementing surveys to students and volunteers for feedback; suggesting improvements and implementing changes to programs based on evaluations and feedback
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA or BS required
  • 2+ years experience working with high school or college students or in an educational setting preferred
  • 2+ years experience with college access, college application and financial aid support
  • Demonstrated commitment to Apex for Youth’s mission, vision, and core values
  • 1-2 years of experience managing projects and/or programs for youth and families; ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned responsibilities
  • Experience developing engaging lesson plans and group facilitation in virtual and in-person group settings
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to create genuine relationships
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Positive and bright disposition with “can do” attitude
  • Proactive nature and self starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously
  • Experience working with low-income and first-generation students a plus
  • Ability to work on Saturdays on-site in Lower Manhattan, Chinatown and take Sunday-Monday as the weekend

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, you will be eligible for roughly a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid federal holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $58,500 – $65,000, depending on experience.
