Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

JOB OVERVIEW

Apex’s Athletics Programs addresses the physical and social-emotional needs of elementary, middle, and high school students through athletics programs run by caring adult volunteers. 

Athletics programming for elementary, middle, and high school students takes place on Saturdays from October – June and consists of Basketball (grades 3-12) and Yoga (grades 3-5). During holiday breaks Athletics programming hosts a week long basketball clinic (grades 3-12) in February and April. Athletics programming for elementary, middle, and high school is offered to participants during July – August students through Apex’s annual We Run as One summer league, Volleyball Club, and Running Club.

The Athletics Program Coordinator, Manhattan will report to the Program Manager of Athletics, Manhattan Programs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in working with elementary, middle, and high school aged youth, excellent program management skills, and experience designing and leading programming.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise volunteers and students at weekly Saturday sessions on-site in Lower Manhattan
  • Support with on-site logistics including arrival, attendance, dismissal
  • Address behavioral issues and support volunteers throughout the session
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and volunteers to monitor students’ performance and progress throughout program
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for Saturday sessions
  • Assist with curriculum development for programming;
  • Assist with database entry, tracking, and surveying
  • Attend relevant team meetings
  • Assist with coordination and organization of Apex’s annual We Run As One (WRAO) summer basketball league in July – August
  • Assist with the recruitment, intake and training process for volunteers to ensure quality interactions between volunteers and youth
  • Support Elementary, Middle School, and High School Programs teams and complete duties, as necessary
  • Assist with Apex organizational events and initiatives, as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-2 years experience working with youth or in an educational and athletics (Basketball, Yoga, Running, or Volleyball) setting preferred
  • Proficiency in Mandarin or Spanish a plus
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to create genuine relationships
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned responsibilities
  • Positive and bright disposition with “can do” attitude
  • Proactive nature and self starter, ability to problem-solve autonomously
  • Candidates are expected to be able to commute to the Apex office in Manhattan at least 1-2 days a week
  • Ability to work Saturdays in Manhattan as needed, and take Sunday and Monday as the weekend

 

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $51,000 – $56,000, depending on experience.

 

Overview of Benefits

Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
