Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.
Apex serves over 2000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.
JOB OVERVIEW
As the HR Associate Director at Apex for Youth, you will play a pivotal role in driving the organization’s strategic goals around human resource management and contributing to our mission. Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will lead and oversee various HR initiatives to enhance the employee experience, align HR strategies with Apex’s broader objectives, and support the development of great teams and a positive staff culture. Your responsibilities will encompass managing the employee lifecycle (talent acquisition and recruitment, onboarding, retention and offboarding), compensation and total rewards, staff engagement and development, and ensuring compliance and up-to-date HR practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruitment and Talent Management:
- Continually identify capability gaps and collaborate with hiring managers to attract and retain top candidates for key positions
- Support the enhancement of the interview and selection process for all positions, including strengthening internal capacity around interview practices
- Ensure up-to-date and accurate job descriptions are maintained across the organization, reflecting evolving roles and responsibilities
- Support the enhancement of the annual performance evaluation process to compensation strategy, linking employee contributions to recognition and rewards
- Design and execute performance management systems, partnering with department leaders to establish clear career paths, leadership opportunities, and learning initiatives for staff
- Deliver resources and training to foster professional growth and drive leadership development throughout the organization
- Counsel and coach managers on employee performance issues to promote a positive culture
- Contribute to a succession planning process for the organization that identifies critical roles and potential successors and leadership development programs for potential successors
Human Resource Operations:
- Manage thorough onboarding and offboarding of employees
- Oversee HR compliance efforts to align with employment laws and regulations, promoting fair and ethical practices. Work with outside counsel and internal stakeholders to maintain the organization’s Employee Handbook and supplementary materials
- Support the design and administration of the organization’s total rewards programs, ensuring competitive compensation packages and benefits that support employee well-being and job satisfaction
- Utilize HR data and metrics to assess the effectiveness of HR initiatives, identify trends, and inform decision-making at both strategic and operational levels
- Support the resolution of grievances and investigations of complaints in consultation with organizational leadership, and outside support, as needed
Employee Engagement and Culture:
- Integrate DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility) initiatives into HR practices, promoting an inclusive work environment where all team members feel valued and empowered
- Collaborate with Directors to support their skills development in fostering great teams and a positive staff culture
- Implement initiatives that acknowledge staff contributions in a meaningful way, fostering a sense of appreciation and belonging within the organization
- Administer staff surveys, perform analysis and presentations of findings and develop pathways for organizational improvement
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in HR management, with a focus on employee engagement, talent acquisition, performance management and total rewards
- Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits practices, HR compliance, and HR analytics
- Demonstrated experience in strategic HR planning and aligning HR initiatives with organizational goals
- Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and influence others positively
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse work environment
- Commitment to an employee centered culture, with a customer service approach
- Track-record of building consultative relationships with managers to support and influence decision making
- Candidates with previous experience in a complex, sizable non-profit human services organization are highly desirable
- Proven verbal and written communication skills, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation, and training

Overview of Benefits
Paid time off: In the first year of employment, employees are eligible for approximately a combined 40 days of vacation, holiday, personal, and sick leave (10 vacation days, 12 paid holidays, org-wide closures for one week over the winter holidays and one week during the Fourth of July, 5 sick days per year, 3 personal days a year). Additional vacation days accrue according to years worked in the organization.
Medical and other benefits: Employees are eligible to participate in a range of medical, dental and vision insurance plans with Apex covering the majority of the cost for employees; 401K plan with employer matching; flexible spending account; commuter benefits; paid parental leave; and professional development stipend.
Hybrid workplace: Apex provides for a flexible remote work schedule on specific days of the week and requires employees to be on-site for other days of the week, and for special events and programs.

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $95,000, depending on experience.
